Veterinary science and practice play important role in animal breeding and in agrarian sector of economics. They are focused on preservation of health of all types of animals, search of means and methods for disease prevention, enhancement of food products quality and livestock raw materials, solution of medicinal and veterinary problems on human health protection, and veterinary and sanitary issues on environmental protection.
Before 1956 in Yakutia veterinary assistants were trained in Yakut agricultural college. In 1956 Department of veterinary at the Faculty of agriculture in Yakut state university was opened. First deans of the Faculty of agriculture were candidates of veterinary sciences – N.V. Kudryavtsev, K.P. Mikhaltsov, V.V. Lebedev.
At the present time the Faculty of veterinary medicine consists of 4 departments heads of which are doctor of science, professor G.P. Protodyakonova, doctor of science, professor A.N. Nyukkanov, associate professors Koryakina L.P. and Struchkov N.A. A dean of the Faculty is doctor of veterinary sciences G.P. Protodyakonova (from 2017), associate deans are candidate of veterinary sciences Maksimova A.N. (for academic affairs), V.V. Matarkina (for socially educational work), Nifontov K.R. (for scientific work).
